Frequently Asked Questions

How Long will it take to learn?

Our Number one Most asked question! The answer is ... It depends!

Is the swimmer used to new people/places/expectations?

If so, great! we will be able to progress to water safety right away! If not, our instructors will need to take the time to build a relationship based on trust before we can get swimmers working on independence in the water.

Is the swimmer comfortable with their face in the water? flat on their back

Breath control and body position is the first and most important piece of learning how to swim. Kids tend to try to keep their eyes dry because they are unfamiliar with the sensation of water on their face or in their ears. This essential first step cannot be rushed. Dunking or forcing children in the water can cause distrust and lead to water trauma. Practice getting water on the face at home early and often (every bathtime) to help your swimmer get past this essential first milestone.

Are you planning on practing?

We view water safety as a group effort. Instructor, student, and parent/cargivers are all a team to attain water safety and water confidence. With over 12 years of experience, we have found that swimmers learn the fastest when they practice their skills at least 2 times per week outside of class (pool not required) and when they are surrounded by positivity and confidence. If we enter into a situation with doubt, kids feel that and tend to be more nervous so be sure to be positive when talking a

Other common questions

WhAT IF MY CHILD CRIES IN THEIR LESSONS?

Totally normal! Our instructors are accustomed to swimmers that are nervous with new people, have entered the separation anxiety phase of development, or are just nervous about getting in the water. We have seen it all and know how to redirect, distract and connect with kids in order to build trust needed to really get down to the nitty gritty of water safety as soon as possible and without trauma inducing techniques such as dunking or giving too little support.

My child is over 2, can i get in the water with them if they are nervous?

No. Having a parent in the pool after a certain age tends to only prolong the time it takes to build the essential foundation of trust with the instructor that must be built in order for kids to progress. If they learn that they get their way out of work by crying, they will cry everytime. If we believe in their abilities they will pick up on that and feel confident and proud of their hard work, courage and skills in the water. Lessons we hope they take with them into other new life experiences!

My swimmer has done lessons before, why do they seem to forget?

We find that regressions are more closely tieds to confidence in their skills in the water than skills attained. It is for this reason that we reccommend chosing to stop lessons based on your childs progress rather than the seasons. Many families think of swim lessons as a summertime activity. This set up kids for failure and parents for a lot of wasted time and money. The more your swimmer practices proper technique and EYES DOWN swimming outside of lessons, the less likely they are to regress.

What kind of floatation device should I use for my swimmer?

Lifejackets are the only floatation device we reccommend for anyone learning to swim. Layers of protection are extremely important: Fences, Lifejackets and teaching the child to self rescue and swim comfortably are all part of preventing drowning. KEEP IN MIND: Children pick up on our energy, the more confident you are and practice skills learned at swim lessons with them, the more your child will want to learn to swim  to please you. Therefore, the faster your child will acquire the skills.
